Kayaks

The kayaks and paddling gear are of top quality and modern. The kayaks give superb stability,

handling and safety. For the kayak tours was have our clients in double kayaks for the added safety and speed, and single kayaks for the more experienced.

Pat, your guide, carries a VHF Marine radio on all tours and flares are also available however care and risk-assessment is taken to ensure this rescue equipment will not be required.

We have a variety of tour options but sometimes weather prevents us from going to some parts of the harbour.

Bring warm clothing, and a change of clothes as a precaution, sunhat, water, camera and a smile. Best to wear a fleece/polypropylene top with a windbreaker.

Taiaroa Heads Tour: This is the most popular tour and involves a short drive from Portobello down the harbour road to Wellers Rock for a beach launch. We paddle towards the heads, passing old gun emplacements to Pilots Beach then under the spectacular cliffs of the Albatross colony. Great viewing of the hundred of shags, and their nests, gulls galore and hopefully the majestic Albatrosses gliding overhead. We continue out into the blue Pacific and down the coast a short distance, if the sea allows, before returning up the harbour to a beach for a hot drink and one of Marys marvellous muffins. We then return to Wellers Rock and home.

This tour offers an excellent insight into the Peninsulas eco-systems and normally involves close
encounters with albatross, NZ fur seals, shags and many other seabirds. If were lucky we can add penguins and sea-lions to that list.

Pat will supply an interesting commentary about the history of the area and the habits of the local bird and marine life.
